When the last of the students tossed their scribbles onto his desk and left the room, Jack would have slumped into his seldom-used chair to stare into space. But Alexander was still there, so he couldn’t let go of his mask just yet. Keeping his back turned, he rifled instead through the pile of sheets, pretending to check names.

What in God’s name do I do now?

But he couldn’t ignore him indefinitely. He had helped out, essentially by doing nothing. Did he even realize what it had meant? That it had made Jack’s final class a living, breathing thing instead of a zombie-walk?

“So…” He pressed the pile of exercises against his chest and half-sat on his desk. “Thanks.” His eyes darted up and then away again: the minimum of contact needed in order not to come off as a complete freak.
